ABOUT ME

Hi, I'm Tamsin
I’m a PhD researcher at the University of York interested in how games shape player experiences and behaviour, particularly the ways players engage with, disengage from and return to digital games.
My current research focuses on limited-time events in live-service games, bringing together player research, game analytics and industry collaboration to understand how these systems work in both research and practice.
MY RESEARCH JOURNEY
My background combines psychology, games and human-computer interaction. Before beginning my PhD, I completed an MSc in Advanced Psychology at the University of Plymouth, developing a strong foundation in research methods and understanding human behaviour.
I’m now completing my PhD through the iGGi Centre for Doctoral Training at the University of York, where my research explores limited-time events in digital games. My work spans large-scale game analysis, qualitative player research and longitudinal engagement data, allowing me to examine game systems from several perspectives.
A central part of my work is connecting academic research with game development. Through industry collaboration and Knowledge Exchange, I’m interested in how evidence about player behaviour and experience can translate into practical decisions about game design.
RESEARCH INTERESTS
My research interests sit at the intersection of player experience, game design and data, with a particular focus on understanding how and why players engage with digital games.

HOW I APPROACH RESEARCH
I take a mixed-methods, player-centred approach, combining different forms of evidence and working across academic and industry contexts.

BEYOND RESEARCH
Outside research, I’m usually getting lost in another world—whether through a video game, a good book, or a creative project. I’m a lifelong gamer and particularly enjoy games with rich worlds, stories and characters to discover.
I also enjoy reading, creative projects, travelling, and spending time with family and friends, usually accompanied by a cup of tea.
